Calls to Review and Revoke the New Visa Law

Bali Leaders Join Growing Chorus Protesting New Immigration Rules.

(4/14/2003) The planned removal of the visa-free visit facility for the nationals of 48 countries set forth in a Presidential decree issued late last month, has created a growing chorus of Bali leaders calling for an urgent review and revocation of the ruling.

Bali's Chairman of the Bali Tourism Board, Ir. Putu Agus Antara, quoted in the local press, has openly questioned if the Government has thoroughly considered the many negative effects of the decision on National tourism.

Meanwhile, a local observer of small and medium scale business enterprises, Ir. Bagia Arta, has called on the legislature to take the necessary political steps to revoke or review the Presidential decision. According to Arta, "if the tourists to Bali are lost because other destinations can offer lower prices, we (in Bali) can only sit back and bite our fingers."

Representatives of local tourism organizations, hotels, tour operators and tourism labor unions met on Sunday. April 13, 2003 at Bali's Grand Hyatt to discuss the unpopular ruling and devise strategies to persuade the Government to revoke a decision widely seen as dangerously detrimental to the Nation's tourism industry.
