HIV/AIDS Cases Continue to Increase

Bali Count Now Stands at 325.

(10/29/2003) According to a statement issued by Bali's Vice Governor during the ceremonies marking International AIDS Day on May 17, 2003, the number of known cases of HIV/AIDS in Bali now stands at 325 people, making Bali the 5th highest infection rate nationally following Jakarta, Papua (Irian Jaya), East Java and Riau.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) estimated the actual number of cases in Indonesia at a figure close to 52,000 people, despite an official nationwide count standing at 3,614 infected individuals. An estimated 42 million people worldwide were newly infected with HIV in 2002. During that same year an estimated 5 million people around the globe had developed AIDS and 3.1 million died from the disease.
