Garuda Strike Averted

Airline's Technicians Call Off Planned Strike.

(5/29/2003) A strike by 641 technicians employed at Garuda Indonesia scheduled to take place May 27-29, 2003, has been postponed indefinitely by the Association of Aircraft Technicians (ITPU), the union for the technicians, just one day before the planned walk-out.

Citing a desire that the ITPU's services to the public should not be affected by any internal conflict with the Airline's management, the Union has labeled the threatened strike as the "last choice" in resolving their differences with Garuda.

The threatened strike opposing plans to re-assign the Airline's technicians to a new subsidiary - PT Garuda Maintenance Facility Aero Asia, would have seen technicians at 25 domestic airports and 5 overseas bases walk off their job. In anticipation of the industrial action, 31 special Air Force technicians from a base in South Sulawesi had been flown to Jakarta to fill in for striking workers.

The ITPU is complaining that the reassignment to a company subsidiary may be prejudicial to their members, some with almost 30 years seniority with the national carrier. The Union has called on Garuda to meet with their members to answer any concerns that exist and turn over a due diligence report on the financial standing of the maintenance subsidiary.
