Parked Busses and Vans

Estimated 60% of Bali's Transport Armada is Idle.

(6/23/2003) According to Bali's Tourism Transport Association (PAWIBA), some 60% of the island's armada of 600 tourism busses and 1,250 vans and sedans used for tours and transfers of visiting tourists are currently sitting idle due to the lack of passengers.

Speaking to the local press in Bali, Ir. Yus Suhartana, the Chairman of PAWIBA, explained that most companies have staved off financial collapse by rotating the use of drivers and their vehicle fleets, seeking business from local school groups, local transportation to religious ceremonies and festivals, and handling low cost transportation for tourists from Taiwan and Korea.

According to Suhartana, owners of transportation are resisting, as much as they can, any impulse to sell off parts of their transportation fleets knowing that prices would be very depressed should they try to sell in the current economic situation.
