Seeking to Triple Japanese Arrivals

Indonesia and Japan Sign a Memorandum of Understanding on Tourism Development.

(6/30/2003) While accompanying Indonesia's President on an official visit to Japan during the last week of June (2003), Minister of Culture and Tourism I Gede Ardika signed four separate memorandums of understanding with the Japanese Government intended to increase Japanese tourist flows to Indonesia to new heights of between 1.5 to 2 million visitors each year.

Japanese visitors have averaged some 600,000 annual visitors to Indonesia, a figure that has dropped some 50% in the aftermath of the Bali terror attack and the SARS panic.

The memorandums, signed by both countries, cover joint tourism promotion, tourism product developments and investment, developments of human resources, and cooperation among members of the private sector.

The Minister explained that the memorandums signed in Tokyo laid the framework for further cooperation, requiring that his office sit with members of the Indonesian tourism industry to formulate concrete policies and programs.
