Moderate Earthquake Rattles Bali

No Damage Reported from 6th of July Shake Felt in Bali.

(7/7/2003) The Department of Meteorology and Geophysics recorded an earthquake at 2:39 local time (0639 GMT) on Sunday, July 6, 2003, that was felt in parts of Bali.

The tremor's epicenter was located 44 kilometers south of Bali's capital city of Denpasar at a depth of 20 kilometers below the the ocean's surface.

No damages was reported from the quake which registered a 5.1 magnitude. While some local residents felt the tremor occur, many others will only learn of the geophysical episode from newspaper reports.

Bali, like most of Indonesia, sits atop the convergence of several major geological plates, giving rise to the country's many volcanoes and frequent earthquakes.
