Tourism Flows Remain Normal

Early Indications that Visitor Totals to Bali Unaffected by Jakarta Bombing. Effect May Still Be Felt in Forward Bookings.

(8/11/2003) Preliminary indications are that tourism totals to Bali have not been affected by the Jakarta hotel bombing. Passenger movement figures from Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport for Tuesday, August 5, 2003, showed 7,201 arrivals (3,830 domestic and 3,371 international) and 6,556 (3,745 domestic and 2,811 international) departures.

These figures represent the totals for both domestic and international travelers and are in keeping with travel patterns prior to the Jakarta blast. Perhaps most noteworthy, news of the Jakarta attack did not cause a wave of panic or max exodus for visitors to the island.

Future Bookings Still a Question

While Bali appears to have weathered the after-effects of the Jakarta bombing with minimal cancellations it remains to be seen what effect, if any, the terror attack will have on forward booking patterns from people planning their future holidays in Bali.
