Lessons Learned in Crisis Management

Bali Discovery's John M. Daniels Speaks at Convention & Expo Summit in Hong Kong.

(9/1/2003) Bali Discovery Tour's President Director John M. Daniels participated as a panelist at the 2003 Convention & Expo Summit held August 29-31, 2003, in Hong Kong.

The summit, jointly hosted by and organized by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University's School of Hotel & Tourism Management and the University of Nevada's William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration, featured presentations from distinguished experts addressing the Convention and Exhibition industry, market development issues, new conceptual approaches to event management, education and crisis management.

John M. Daniels participated in a session titled "Crisis Management: Lessons Learned" that also included Mr. Alan Orlob, Vice President of Corporate Security for Marriot International; Ellen Kwan the General Manager for Tourism Marketing at the Hong Kong Tourism Board; Mr. Bert Van Walbeek the Managing Director of The Winning Edge; and Steve Shellum the Editor of Hotel Asia Pacific Magazine.

Daniels, in his remarks presented the Bali perspective on crisis management and the impact on the island's arrival statistics from a series of crisis dating from 9-11, the October 2002 bombing attack on Bali, the Iraqi War and the SARS panic. Recounting Bali's tribulations while enduring these repetitive shocks to its tourism industry, Daniels reviewed a number of Bali successes and missteps encountered in handling its crisis communications.
