Soulflip to Appear at Kuta Karnival

Asian Fusion Group on List of Musical Entertainers to Celebrate Peace.

(9/8/2003) Added to the growing list of musical groups scheduled to appear during the month-long Kuta Karnival, September 11 – October 12, 2003, is the Asian fusion band Soulflip.

Soulflip released its debut album of world music under the title "Head Massage" one year ago to rave reviews. Combining electronic beats with traditional Asian and Indonesian musical instruments – the band has been likened to the musical meeting of gado-gado and a Waldorf salad. The group's music merges electronic sounds with synthesized Hindu vocal tracks, with tabla and flutes thrown in for good measure.

Asia is clearly Soulflip's home with a repertoire that embraces Vietnamese music, Javanese folk songs, Nepalese chants, and Indian folk melodies.

American bandleader Karsten Schroeer swapped a life in San Francisco for the cosmopolitan blend of Singapore culture and music, before making the next musical progression to Bali. The band's Bandung musicians—Bagja Subagja, Asep Sukmana and Gun Gun Permana — perform on traditional instruments.

Soulflip is slated for several performances in October during the Kuta Karnival, including a main performance on October 10 on the beachside stage.
