Ali Imron Sentenced to Life Behind Bars

Judges Reject Prosecutor's Recommendation for 20 Year Sentence.

(9/22/2003) 33 year-old Ali Imron, charged with delivering the explosives used in the Bali bombings of October 12, 2002 received sentence of life in prison in a sentence handed down in the Denpasar court on Thursday, September 19, 2003.

Unlike his brothers, Amrozi and Iman Samudra who were given death sentences, Ali Imron escaped capital punishment due to his expressed remorse for his acts that contributed to the death of more than 202 people.

Prosecutors had recommended a 20 year sentence for Imron, a suggestion rejected by the panel of judges who applied the more severe life term in rendering their final verdict.

Eleven people charged in connection with the Bali terror attack have now been convicted while eighteen others are currently undergoing trials in Bali. A remaining 5 people are under investigation by police and prosecutors for their alleged involvement in the crime.
