An Under-Funded Ministry of Culture and Tourism

Ministry of Culture and Tourism Allocated only 27% of Budget Request for 2004.

(9/22/2003) Funds allocated to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism for fiscal year 2004 total Rp. 280 billion (approximately US$ 32,9 million), just 27.29% of a requested budget of Rp. 1,026 trillion (approximately US$ 121 million) submitted by the Ministry to the Government.

The budget recommended by the Ministry represented an increase of only Rp. 105 billion (approximately US$ 12.4 million) from the total routine allocations in 2003 for the Ministry and the now defunct Culture and Tourism Promotion Board.

Quoted in the Indonesian-language Bisnis Indonesia, Minister Ardika said he hoped the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) would support additional allocations for his department to permit the promotion and development of the tourism sector.

Funds within the down-graded allocation dedicated to promotion and marketing activities amount to Rp. 105 billion (approximately US$ 12.5 million), an amount dwarfed in comparison to funds earmarked for tourism promotion in competing regional destinations such as Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
