Legian Street Closed for 24 Hours on October 12

Part of Heightened Security Program Surrounding Commemoration Ceremonies for Bali Bombing Victims.

(9/29/2003) Bali's Chief of Police, Inspector General Made Mangku Pastika, has declared that he will close the Legian area to all traffic for 24 hours on October 12th to facilitate security arrangements in connection with commemoration activities of the first anniversary of the terror attacks that claimed the lives of 202 people.

Current plans call for a mass march of thousands of mourners, survivors and their families to take place on the evening of October 12th. The march, led by Australian Prime Minister John Howard, will start on Kuta beach and proceed through the streets of Bali ending at "Ground Zero" - the site of the bomb's detonation in front of the Sari Club.

Chief Pastika, quoted in the Jakarta Post said, "Only pedestrians will be allowed to get through Jalan Legian. We will be very watchful for the possibility of somebody driving a car loaded with explosives into the streets to detonate near a crowd."
