Singapore Criticizes VOA Policy

Concern Grows Over Negative Impact of New Immigration Policies on Regional Arrivals.

(10/6/2003) The growing chorus of dissent against the coming changes in Indonesia's visa policies has been joined by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) who fear the negative impact on regional tourism arrivals resulting from Indonesia's plans to start selling visas on arrival (VOA) to the nationals of 37 countries visiting Indonesia for their holidays.

Speaking to the English-language Jakarta Post, representatives of STB voiced their objection to the new visa policy saying that they felt that the new policy would serve to undermine international travel to the region, particularly for people who include two or more national destinations in their travel itinerary.

Singapore has expressed similar opinions in the past regarding the Rp. 1 million (approximately US$ 120) exit tax paid by all Indonesian residents before they are allowed to travel abroad.
