A Life-Long Guide to Bali

Senior Bali Guides to be Given Life-Long Licenses by Governor Pastika

(12/30/2017) The Bali chapter of the Indonesian Guide Association (HPI-Bali) has recommended to Bali’s Governor to grant senior licensed guides lifelong licenses thereby removing the need to renew their permits every three years.

As reported by, the Secretary of HPI-Bali, I Komang Puji, delivered the request during an exchange with the Governor at the Bali House of Representatives on Saturday, December 30, 2017.

Puji asked the Governor to grant life-long licenses to any guide who has worked as a senior guide for a minimum of 25 years.

Licensed guides in Bali must undertake tests on tourism sites, history and local culture as well as agree to wear Balinese traditional costumes when working in their chosen field. Guides are also required to hold a college degree.

HPI-Bali has submitted a list of Senior Guides to the Bali Tourism Service that they recommend be issued life-long guide licenses.

Puji said, “Earlier, the Governor responded that he is prepared to grant life-long licenses for senior guides. We hope this change will be soon realized.”

There are presently some 12,000 licensed guides working in Bali, with 7,000 from that total actively working as guides. HPI records show 666 senior guides with a minimum of 25 years working experience who will be granted permanent licenses under the promised change.
