Indonesian National Carrier Launches Innovative Program to Assist the Victims of the Nabire Earthquake.

(12/18/2004) On November 26, 2004, a devastating earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale shook the remote Papuan community of Nabire, 600 kilometer west of the provincial capital of Jayapura. An estimated 34 people died and hundreds more were injured as a direct consequence of the natural disaster and the secondary tremors which occured in the days after the initial quake.

National and international relief efforts are underway to prevent the outbreak of disease and provide assistance to the local population, many of whom now live on the streets in areas where their homes once stood.

Garuda Cares

Indonesia's National Carrier Garuda Indonesia has recently launched an innovative humanitarian program to assist the victims of the Nabire earthquake. Frequent Flyers of Garuda Indonesia are being asked to donate their mileage points to help the people of Nabire. Mileage redemption of either 5,000 or 3,000 miles will result in a packet of humanitarian assistance to be delivered to relief efforts in the name of the Frequent Flyer.

The Airline has also extended special facilities to Indonesian Medical professionals and various public welfare agencies seeking to fly to Nabire and assist in the relief effort.
