(8/8/2001) On Tuesday, August 07, at 11:30 a.m. An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale shook parts of Bali and East Java. The epicenter for the tectonic event was located south of Banyuwangi, East Java, in the Indian Ocean at an estimated depth of 102 kilometers below sea level.

Although no injuries or property damage have been associated with the earthquake, its effects were felt in Surabaya and Java. At Surabaya's Juanda Airport crowds waiting for the arrival of former President Abdurrahman Wahid were reported to have momentarily panicked when they felt the tremors. In Bali the earth's movement was felt in Denpasar, Tabanan, Negara in the east and south of the island.

Much of Indonesia sits in the fabled "ring of fire" an area of intense tectonic and volcanic activity.
