Minister Calls for Open Skies

Indonesia's New Coordinating Minister for The Economy Suggests Open Skies Policy for Indonesia; Asks Business Sector to Report Counter-Productive Rules and Regulations.

(8/30/2001) The Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Professor Dorojatun Kuntjoro-Jakti suggests that Indonesia adopts a totally open sky policy towards landing rights for foreign air carriers as a means to kick-start tourism and the State economy. In comments made at the Annual Conference of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), former economics professor and former Indonesian Ambassador to the United States called for an equally open attitude towards gateways allowing foreign airlines to land in any Indonesian city where they perceived a market to exist.

"By opening airports to foreign aircraft hopefully more tourists will come to Indonesia," Minister Dorojatun said. He also called on the members of PHRI to be more aggressive and creative in marketing their respective destinations.

Later, the Minister in charge of bringing Indonesia's economy back to full health, asked business people to make an inventory of all regulations that impede the development of business within the Country. He challenged the group of hotel and restaurant professionals to "Please write a report (about such problems) and address it directly to the Coordinating Minister for the Economy."
