We'll Huff and Puff and with Criminals Get Tough

Bali Tourism Police Receive Donation of 20 Polygon Bicycles from Banking Group.

(3/18/2006) On Saturday, March 11, 2006 a group of 20 banking executives from across Asia came to Bali's cultural and artistic center of Ubud to enjoy a weekend of team-building, pausing from their busy schedule of meetings and discussion, the bankers found time for a short bicycle excursion down the interesting back roads of Ubud on a fleet of shining, brand-new bicycles purchased especially for the occasion.

Team Building and Helping the Balinese

Following breakfast at the Uma Ubud Resort the group has little knowledge of what lied ahead, except that a morning's recreation has been arranged on their behalf. Driven to the foreyard of a picturesque local temple near Ubud, the group of bankers was greeted by the sight of 20 unassembled bicycles and the tools necessary to make the two-wheelers road-worthy. Under the careful supervision of skilled technicians from Indonesia's leading bicycle manufacturer, Polygon, the bikes quickly took shape, ending with a final seat adjustment, the fitting of a safety helmet and a quick briefing on safety concluding the handover process.

So far, so good. As the group contemplated the journey that lay ahead, a contingent of officers from Bali's Tourism Police arrived on the scene; working equally to clear a way down the roads for the visiting bankers and protect unsuspecting Bali street dogs whose wont it is to doze on the shoulder of village roadways.

Always a good idea to explore the Island with a "local," the group was soon joined by two distinguished bicycling members of the local constabulary: Senior Superintendent of Tourism Security for the Bali Police, I Gk Budiartha; and a Japanese Police Inspector on an extended assignment with the Bali Police force, Police Inspector Orito Makoto.

On a morning blessed with perfect weather, the group wound its way through local villages, pausing here and there to examine the architecture of road-side temples or chat with local villagers before emerging some time later on the streets of downtown Ubud for the final sprint to the Ubud Police Headquarters.

Dismounting the bikes and removing their helmets at the Police Station where cold towels and cold refreshment awaited their arrival, the group of ABN AMRO bankers then generously donated their brand new bikes and helmets to Officer Budiartha for use by the Tourism Police of Bali in their daily patrols.

Inspector General Dr. Sunarko D.A., the Chief of the Bali Police, thanked the bankers for their "kind attention to Bali's regional Police, adding that the "bicycles and helmet are useful for us (the police) to increase patrol activity in the tourism areas in Bali to preserve peace and tranquility."

Organizing the ABN Amro visit to Bali was The Event Company of Singapore.
