Deadline Looms for Prepaid Phone Card Users

Prepaid Phone Card Users Who Fail to Register Before April 28, 2006 will See Stored Value Evaporate.

(3/25/2006) Stricter security controls that will compel all prepaid telephone card users to provide detailed person data are set to be introduced - ready or not - on April 28, 2006.

As reported on balidiscovery.com [ See: Prepaid Phone Card Users Must Now Register], Indonesia's Minister of Communications and Information decreed in late 2005 that the final deadline for ownership registration of phone cars would fall on April 28, 2006.

No Compromise

The Minister of Communications and Information, Sofyan A. Djalil, warned in the Indonesian-language Bisnis Indonesia, "the Government will not extend the deadline for number registration for pre-paid telephone cards, meaning that any remaining value on still unregistered cards will expire on that date."

The Minister is using the remaining time until the late April deadline to urge the Nation's cellular operators to intensively socialize the new regulations to their customers. With nearly one month and a half remaining until the deadline, only 34.36% of all prepaid card holders, or about 17.3 million customers, have even bothered to take the time to provide the required personal data.

Meanwhile, cellular telephone providers are becoming concerned that their personnel and software systems may become overburdened with the massive number of last-minute registrations. In order to hasten the registration process, telephone operators are sending regular reminders by SMS to existing customers reminding them of the legal obligation to register their identities or risk losing their cellular service.
