Ansett Australia Bankrupt

Directors Pull The Plug on Australia's Second Largest Carrier. 1,000 Seats Per Week to Bali Lost.

(9/15/2001) On Friday, September 14, the Australian Government announced they would commence a formal investigation to see if any Company Law was violated in connection with the failure and closure of Australia's Ansett Airlines. That investigation will focus on whether the airline's Directors continued to trade despite being in a state of bankruptcy, actions specifically prohibited under Australian law.

Ansett is the second Australian airline to fail in the past months with Impulse Airlines going under in May of this year.

Ansett operated 10 flights a week from Bali to Australia serving the Australian destinations of Melbourne, Broome, Perth, Darwin, Sydney and Brisbane.

Passengers stranded in Bali due to the sudden closure of the airline are being transferred to QANTAS flights.

The Australian market is among the largest inbound producers for Bali, causing local tourism operators to hope that Garuda Indonesia and QANTAS will soon seek additional capacity to take up the shortfall in passenger seats created by Ansett's bankruptcy.
