Nusa Dua United to Protect Bali's Environment
Hotels in Nusa Dua & Tanjung Benoa Unite to Clean Up Their Corner of the World.
(8/20/2007) Hotels in Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa have formally registered to take part in the community-based environmental campaign, Clean Up the World, joining an estimated 35 million volunteers in over 120 countries that in 2007 uniting to reduce the causes of global climate change.
From national clean-up campaigns to recycling and water re-use projects - volunteers are joining forces around the world in a variety of year-long environmental projects culminating in a the Clean Up the World Weekend scheduled for September 14-16, 2007.
A spokesperson for the community project explained: "In the Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa area, we have established a plan to conduct an environmental awareness campaign starting on 15th September 2007 with the theme 'Keep My Bali Clean, Keep My Bali Green'. To generate awareness within the community, all the hotels in the group will initiate the campaign by organizing a school 'mentoring program' on environmental cleanliness."
Seeking to share the importance of living in a clean environment from an early age, the program's sponsors have designed programs to capture the interest of children based on "fun learning," competitions targeting school cleanliness, the creations of environmental cleanliness slogans and field trips to garbage processing centers.

In all, there are total of 18 hotels, including the Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC), joining forces to mentor 9 elementary schools within the Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa area. The program, which was officially launched on August 8, 2007 via a symbolic tree planting by the GM's from the participating hotel involving the teachers and students from the schools. The highlight of the campaign will take place at the Amphitheatre of BTDC in Nusa Dua on September 15, 2007, where a quiz competition will follow a major clean-up of the surrounding areas by a total of 1,305 hoteliers, teachers and students.
"By supporting 'Clean Up the World,' we hope to raise awareness towards environmental cleanliness, the importance of living in a clean environment and a better understanding on how our garbage contributes to global warming. We urge the community to join us in making our small corner of the world a cleaner place to live and help contribute to a safer world," said the campaign's spokesperson.
The Bali Tourism Development Corporation has also confirmed their donation of an Environmental Recycling System (ERS) Machine, a machine that renders garbage into fertilizer. The location for the garbage management center has been designated and represents a major contribution to the program by the BTDC. The actual operation of the Center will be done by the BTDC in cooperation with local government.
Clean Up the World local chairman and founder, Ian Kiernan AO, congratulated all participating hotels in the Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa area on joining the international campaign and making the effort to focus on the cleanliness of the local environment.
"I believe that the Hotels in Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa will have a successful campaign and I congratulate every volunteer for helping to make their community and local environment healthier. The Hotels in Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa working together is an excellent example of how individually and collectively we can make a difference to the environment," said Kiernan.
In 2007, Clean Up the World is encouraging member-participants to take action at a local level to help address climate change. Energy conservation, educational programs, planting trees, walking to school or work days and waste reduction projects are just a few of the possible options members are urged to consider.
Clean Up the World was established in Sydney, Australia in 1993 and is held in partnership with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The campaign brings together community groups, schools, governments, businesses and individuals to undertake activities to improve water quality, clean up local streets, parks, waterways and forests and educate children about the environment.
Globally, the campaign's corporate partner is Veolia Environmental Services and the global media partner is National Geographic Channels International. Qantas is the official airline sponsor. The Australian Government, through its Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, also serves a supporter of Clean Up the World.
