Combating the Scourge of Dengue Fever

Nation-Wide Course for Medical Professionals on Fighting Dengue Fever to begin in Bali on October 29, 2007.

(10/22/2007) The World Bank, in partnership with UNICEF/ENDP/WHO and Welcome Trust, will be running a nationwide learning program on dengue fever designed for health practitioners focusing on epidemiology, transmission and pathology, diagnosis and case management, prevention and control of the disease.

Based on a series of interactive, multi-country video conferences for lectures conducted by world-acclaimed experts, separate self-paced study utilizing a specially developed CD-ROM, and moderated on-line mentoring with local facilitation. This course has already been conducted twice in the region involving senior experts from Thailand lecturing and working with healthcare practitioners in Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines.

Working with the Global Development Learning Network of The World Bank in Denpasar, this program will be simultaneously launched in Jakarta, Makassar, Bandung and Denpasar. Efforts are currently expand the teaching network to also include Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Pekanbaru.

Consisting of 6 two-hour video-conference sessions held over a period of 4 weeks, Bali participants will be able to join the educational program from October 29 to November 19, 2007, at Bali’s Udayana University.

Open to medical practitioners, clinicians, government and health officials – a limited number of seats are available. Corporate and organizational sponsors are being sought to help defray the cost to permit more participation by self-funded medical practitioners.
