Obama Cancels Bali Visit

Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Effects Felt in Bali as President Obama Cancels June Visit.

(6/5/2010) U.S. President Barack Obama has canceled, for the second time, a planned visit to the Asia Pacific that included a stop in Bali in mid-June.

Citing the "on-going environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said: "President Obama spoke tonight with Prime Minister Rudd of Australia, and with President Yudhoyono. President Obama expressed his deep regret that he has to postpone his trip to Asia that was scheduled for later this month. The President looked forward to rescheduling so that he can visit both countries soon. President Obama underscored his commitment to our close alliance with Australia and our deepening partnership with Indonesia."

No date has been suggested for a rescheduled visit. The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta stated that Obama looks forward to visiting both Australia and Indonesia and continuing close coordination on issues of mutual interest. He plans to hold full bilateral meetings with Prime Minister Rudd and President Yudhoyono on the margins of the G-20 meeting in Canada.

Preparations for the now cancelled visit to Bali included visits by advance security teams for the U.S. President and the positioning of support equipment for the visit flown in to Bali on special U.S. Air Force Cargo flights.
