Jakarta Press Says Bali Governor Purchased Controversial West Java Statue for Eventual Display in Bali.

(6/21/2010) The Jakarta Globe reports that Bali's Governor has purchased a controversial outdoor statue that was the focus of protests by religious fundamentalist in Bekasi, West Java.

The 17-meter high statue depicting three traditionally-dressed Sundanese women surrounded by a giant sarong, was built at the Bandung, West Java workshop of Balinese artists Nyoman Nuarta. After its installation at a residential complex in Bekasi, protesters demonstrated against the statue claiming it was sexually provocative and carried a hidden message proselytizing the Christian faith.

According to the Chief of Police for Bekasi, Iman Sugianto, the dismantled statue was purchased by Bali's governor for an undisclosed amount.

It is believed that statue may eventually be shipped to Bali and installed at the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park.
