Multiple Vehicle Owners in Bali to Pay Higher Taxes

Progressive Tax to Curb Vehicle Ownership Slated to Be in Place in Bali by Early 2011.

(7/31/2010) The Bali provincial government has confirmed that a progressive tax for owners of multiple motor vehicles will soon be introduced for the island's motorists. Owners with more than one vehicle registered under their name will be charge an additional tax of 1.5% -3.5% of the assessed value during the annual operating plate renewal process.

As reported by Beritabali.com, the new progressive tax formula is intended to reduce the escalating number of motor vehicles operating on Bali's roadways.

The head of the law and human rights of the provincial government, Dewa Putu Eka Wijaya Wardhana, told the press that the new progressive tax will be based on the family card (kartu keluarga) held by each Indonesian.

"We will survey door-to-door to every home to collect data. For instance, every person within a single household holding multiple vehicles will be charged the tax on a progressive basis," explained Dewa Putu.

Dewa Putu said the new progressive tax system for multiple vehicle ownership is targeted for introduction at the beginning of 2011. He also indicated that the new tax will also apply for government-owned and police vehicles.
