We'll Huff and We'll Puff . . .

Botched Raids by Bali Police on High Crime Areas Blamed on Crooked Cops.

(8/16/2010) Beritabali.com reports that police efforts to prepare for the coming fasting month of Ramadan ran afoul when raids on areas of Denpasar known for gang activities and commercial sex activities came up empty handed.

Sweeping raids on the Jalan Kebo Iwo Selatan on Saturday, August 7, 2010, commenced at 11:00 p.m. focusing on Café Bidadari and other locations on Jalan Bung Tomo and Lumintang.

Designed to net commercial sex workers and gang members, police only managed to find an unregistered motorcycle and paraphernalia for an illegal number racket.

The lack of wrongdoers encountered by the police have led some officers to speculate that news of their raids were leaked by police before the actual raids could take place.

Earlier, similar raids carried out in red-light districts in Sanur on Jalan Danau Tempe were greeted by locked and darkened bordellos preventing the police from making any arrests.

One police official, Gede Sukawiyasa, told the press that the inability to find any fugitives, gang members, narcotics, alcohol and prostitutes suggested news of the raids had been leaked. When members of the raiding party arrived at the locations the illicit business places were all closed, unlike more normal nights when the area is thriving with illicit traders and their customers.

Sukawiyasa blamed undisciplined policemen for thwarting the raids and overcoming efforts to keep the action secret which included the confiscation of the hand phones of all participating officers prior to the raids.
