WHO Donates 18,000 Vials of Anti-rabies Serum to Bali

Bali Health Officials Say Sufficient Anti-Rabies Vaccine Now in Hand for Seven Months.

(8/21/2010) The World Health Organization (WHO) has given Bali 18,000 vials of anti-rabies vaccine to help address the inability of local health providers in Bali to provide the medication.

According to Beritabali.com, 2,600 vials of serum were delivered by the WHO to Bali on Wednesday, August 18, 2010, with an additional 18,000 vials slated for arrival over the coming month.

The head of public health in Bali, Dr. Nyoman Sutedja, told the press that 200 vials of anti-serum would be immediately transferred to each of Bali's 9 regencies while waiting for the next shipment to arrive.

Separately, the government of Bali has allocated Rp. 7 billion (US$777,000) for the purchase of anti-rabies vaccine. Meanwhile, the central government has given 18,000 vials of anti-rabies serum to Bali.

In all, Bali will reportedly have a stock of serum by the end of September sufficient to meet Bali's need for serum for the coming seven months.
