Paid, Built, But Not Open for Business

US$4.4 Million New Bali Bus Terminal in Badung Vacant and Unused 8 Months After Completion.

(8/28/2010) Bisnis Bali reports that the costly Rp. 39.6 billion (US$4.4 million) bus terminal built at Mengwitani in the regency of Badung remains empty and abandoned despite the project's formal completion in December of 2009.

A former member of the Badung House of Representatives (DPRD-Badung), Wayan Sandra, told the press "don't leave (the terminal) idle without any added value to the public." According to Sandra, the cost of the Mengwitani terminal project is Rp. 39.6 billion (US$4.4 million) and covers 111,800 square meters of land.

The terminal building completed late last year lacks the complementing infrastructure of an entrance and exit road or a connecting road to Sakah, Gianyar. "If the access road is a provincial project, the Badung officials should be coordinating with the province. Has this been done?" asked the former legislator.

He went on to question how a project the size of the Mengwitani terminal could be undertaken without first making the necessary arrangements for the essential supporting infrastructure.

Completed in December 2009 and abandoned for the last 8 months, the modern terminal is quickly falling into disrepair as evidenced by falling ceiling tiles, buckling floor tiles and missing-and-presumed-stolen lighting fixtures. Posts near the entrance to the terminal are now covered in mold and sinking into the mud - all adding to the general cloud of abandonment hanging over the terminal.
