Man Who Killed Japanese Woman Gets 20 Year Sentence

Laborer Who Killed Japanese Tourist Hiromi Shimada Sentenced to 20 Years Behind Bars.

(8/30/2010) The Denpasar District Court has handed down a 20-year sentence to 31-year-old laborer, Mawardi, for his role in the murder of Japanese tourist Hiromi Shimada (41) on Christmas day 2009.

The judge's sentence conformed to the punishment requested by prosecutors who charged the man with committing a homicide in the course of a robbery. Seeing no mitigating grounds for leniency, judge I Gusti Bagus Komang Wijaya Adi said the actions of Mawardi damaged Bali's reputation as a tourism destination and was sadistic in its nature. Said the judge: "The accused is a sadist. Not only did he kill, but he also sexually outraged the victim while stealing her possessions."

As reported by Kompas.com, the case also involved another man, Abdurahman (21), accused of assisting Mawardi in the crime. He is facing a possible sentence of 13 years for his involvement.

The murder took place after the two men met with the victim on December 25, 2009, at a small food stand in Kuta where all were drinking arak.

The victim reportedly admired the ear-piercing of Mawardi and invited the men back to her residence for more arak. Back at her accommodation the two men offered sex to the Japanese woman who refused and became angry. A struggle ensued in which the woman was fatally stabbed with a kitchen knife.

Before fleeing the scene, Mawardi reportedly stole a wristwatch, necklace credit cards and Rp. 9,000 (US$1.00) from the Shimada.

The woman's body was discovered a day later.

Mawardi's attorney told the court his client was still considering whether to appeal the sentence handed down by the Court.
