Saturation through Migration

Estimated 25,000 Migrants Join Bali's Growing Population Every Year.

(10/16/2010) The Bali Forum on Population estimates that every year around 25,000 Indonesians migrate to Bali. This steady stream of Bali newcomers has contributed to the 20% increase in population over the past decade as reported by balidiscovery.com [See: Bali Population Stands at 3.89 Million].

Beritabali.com quotes the Forum on Population as claiming the present population totals in Bali are largely unsustainable, with Bali's infrastructure and ecosystem realistically capable of carrying only 1.5 million people.

The chairman of Forum, I Gusti Wayan Murjana Yasa, says that Bali's population grows 2.15% per year 45 % of which is due to internal migration from within Indonesia. Most of Bali's new migrants originate from East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, Central Java and Jakarta.

Murjana Yasa foresees the growing rate of migration to Bali as adding to growing competition for employment on the island. Yasa explained, "migrant workers coming to Bali are no longer confined to construction workers, but now include workers in the middle and upper levels."

Yasa said that most migrant workers gravitate to the island's capital of Denpasar and the regency of Badung the centers of Bali's thriving tourism industry.
