President SBY Orders Acceleration of Bali Airport Redevelopment

(10/16/2010) The central government in Jakarta, the Bali provincial government and the management company for Bali's airport PT Angkasa Pura I (PT AP I) have met to discuss how to speed up plans to renovate and upgrade Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport. Responding to orders from Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to speed up the development of Bali's sole airport, plans are now to move-up the commencement of work from Q1 2011 to November 2010.

Bali Post reports the during a meeting of the presidential cabinet, President Yudhoyono instructed work on the airport's renovation be advanced in order to be completed in time for the Asia Pacific Economic Conference (APEC) Summit to be held in 2013. The President told his ministers that he wants work on the renovated airport done by March 2013.

"The President told us three time that the completion of the development of Ngurah Rai Airport must not be late," said the Deputy for the Economy in the Vice-president's office, Tirta Hidayat, in comments to the press following a coordination meeting on accelerating work on the airport held on October 11, 2010 at the Hotel Ramada Bintang Bali.

Also attending the meeting were the Executive Director of PT AP I, Tommy Soetomo; the Main Commissioner of PT AP I, Surato Siswodihardjo; the Regent of Badung, Anak Agung Gde Agung; the General Manager of PT AP I, Heru Legowo, and a number of high ranking government officials.

Tirta said the President wants the project moved up and finished ahead of the scheduled completion in May 2013 in order to have the project done before the APEC Summit. The President said that the development of an airport is a normal matter of business, except in the case of Bali. President SBY feels that the Bali Ngurah Rai Airport has a strategically important value to the Nation. "The President want to show that Bali is secure and safe,” said Tirta.

The Executive Director of PT AP I, Tommy Soetomo, said that renovations would commence on the airport in early November 2010, ahead of early plans set for Q1 2011. He also confirmed that the budget for renovations would reach Rp. 2 trillion (US$222 million) funded from PT AP 1 revenues and borrowings.
