Indonesia to Expand Visa-on-Board Service

Expanded Visa-on-Board Service Should Reduce Waiting Time at Bali Airport.

(10/16/2010) Indonesia's Minister of Culture and Tourism Jero Wacik has confirmed that the current program of visa-issued-on-board (IOB) will soon be expanded to provide better service to visitors and reduce waiting time at those landing at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport.

IOB places uniformed immigration officers on board flights who process visas during the inbound leg to Bali.

The national air carrier Garuda has pioneered the service on board its flights from Tokyo and Osaka to Denpasar (Bali) with plans to soon extend the service to other destination.

The Commercial Director of Garuda, Agus Priyanto, said that his airline, as the national carrier, would always seek to support government programs to increase the number of tourist visitors. Adding, "We already have a program for IOB to other destinations, providing preparations are in place from immigration and for payment procedures from the bank."

Quoted in Bisnis Bali, the chief of tourism for Bali, Ida Bagus Kade Subhisku, said the steps being taken by the government and Garuda are intended to increase the number of visitors. "We hope there is an increase in Bali's main markets with Australia , China and South Korea having great potential."

Subhisku went on to explain that if Australia, China and South Korea can be given the IOB facility then 50% of the foreign tourist coming to Bali no longer need to stand in line.
