Bali's Rabies Death Toll Passes 100

One Year After its Initial Outbreak, the 100th Victim Dies from Rabies in Bali.

(10/18/2010) Bali has reached the unenviable benchmark of its 100th death attributed to rabies. The latest victim, according to Kompas.com, was 50-year-old Nyoman Suwadi of Banjar Pagutan, Padang Sambian in Denpasar.

The man presented with rabies-like symptoms of hydrophobia, photophobia, extreme nervousness and foaming at the mouth at Bali's Sanglah General Hospital on Friday, October 15, 2010. Suwadi was bitten one year ago, but failed to seek anti-serum treatment available from local hospitals.

Bali's rabies toll is almost certain to grow with 4 new suspected cases reported at the General Hospital in the last week. While anti-serum administered shortly after a dog bite is effective in presenting rabies, patients who delay treatment until symptoms of the disease appear are largely beyond medical help for what is essentially a fatal disease.
