Bali Handicraft Exports on the Increase

Bali Handicraft Exports Increase 18.7% in First Eight Months of 2010.

(10/25/2010) Despite a world economy colored by uncertainty, Bali has managed to export US$152.8 million in handicrafts during the period January-August 2010.

The State news agency Antara reports that, according to the head of the export department of the Industry and Trade Section of Bali's provincial government, Putu Bagiada, the performance for the first eight months of 2010 represent an 18.7% increase over the same period in 2009.

Balinese-styled handicrafts have a demonstrated ability to attract international buyers through the growing demand for these items. Chief among the items purchased for export are furniture, silver and gold jewelry and souvenirs. The growing sales in these handicraft have been sustained despite intense competition from neighboring markets in Vietnam, India, China and Thailand where mass-production production methods are employed. Bali, meanwhile, still largely depends on a cottage-industry approach where items are made individually and by hand.

Silver jewelry from Bali also has a strong market in the U.S.A., Europe, Australia and Asia producing sales of US$17.7 million during the period January-August, an increase of 17% over 2009.
