Gotta Keep Those Lovin' Good Vibrations

Over-commercialization of Tanah Lot Temple Threaten to Disrupt its Cosmic Harmony.

(10/30/2010) Beritabali.com says that commercial developments surrounding Bali's sacred Pura Tanah Lot have reached the point of over-saturation and called for a halt to the construction of new art shops and restaurants. The commercial over-exploitation of the areas immediately surrounding Tanah Lot is exceeding capacity and is the source of complaints from those concerned with spiritual tourism in Bali.

These critics claim that the heavily commercialized area surrounding Tanah Lot is threatening the "spiritual vibration" of one of Bali's most revered religious sites. One such critic is the famous Agung Prana, a pioneer in the development of spiritual, community-based tourism. According to Prana: "In the past, when you initially entered Tanah Lot, the spiritual vibration of the place was evident. But, now, when you disembark your car in the parking lot you are confronted by a variety of art shops to the point that something has been lost (in the atmosphere) at Tanah Lot."

The award-winning Balinese tourism leader and environmentalist suggests that those managing Tanah Lot and the local government should not allow new construction. Adding: "I feel they should stop building art shops and other buildings, even those deemed as infrastructure. I think we should maximize that which already exists."

Prana said that in addition to Tanah Lot there are other areas of Bali suitable for development for spiritual tourism destinations, such as Jatiluwih and Batukaru. "These two area must be preserved; as far as possible, don't build hotels that will reduce the existing spiritual vibration," said Prana.
