Make Way for Moby!

Bali Water Police Save Stranded Whale.

(10/30/2010) Officers from the Bali Water Police successfully saved a stranded whale near Bali's port of Benoa on Friday, October 29, 2010, by pushing the large mammal back into the open ocean.

The Antara news agency said the whale was first spotted at around 2:30 pm on Friday. A port security official immediately reported the beaching of the whale to Bali's water police.

When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered a partially beached and exhausted black whale, desperately attempting to return to the ocean.

Held hostage by low water levels, police joined the whale in the water gently guiding it back to a channel leading to open water. Patience and hard work eventually paid off as the whale finally made good an escape from the shallow waters of the harbor basin.

Water police officers describe the whale as measuring between 3 and 4 meters.

Rescue efforts consumed more than hour, drawing attention from local residents and boaters who watched the heroic effort to save the large animal.

Whale groundings are becoming increasing frequent occurrences in the waters surrounding Bali.
