US$33.6 Million in Bali Visa Fees January-August 2010

Bank Indonesia Analysis of Bali's Length of Stay Does Not Tally with Statistic Bureau Reports.

(11/6/2010) Immigration authorities at Bali's airport have collected US$33.6 million in visa-on-arrival (VOA) fees for the period January-August 2010.

The VOA fee is the US$25 per passenger fee collected from the nationals of selected countries eligible to purchase a 30-day visa upon landing in Indonesia. [See: Visa Guide for Bali and Indonesia]

Quoted by Bisnis Bali, Jeffrey Kairupan, the head of the Bali branch of Bank Indonesia, said the visa revenues were paid by the 1,379,316 foreign visitors from participating countries in the VOA scheme who came to Bali during the first eight months of 2010.

Kairupan pointed to the continually escalating amount of VOA fees received by immigration each month reflecting the steadily growing number of tourist visitors to Bali.

Kairupan also told the press that tourists visiting Bali on the average stay for a period of more than one week. This information is, however, at variance with information from Bali Statistics Bureau that reports length-of-stay to be decreasing for tourist visitors and presently standing at only 3.23 day. The former chairman of the Bali chapter of the Indonesian Hotel & Restaurant Association (PHRI-Bali), I Gde Wiratha has renewed a popular call for the abolition of the visa fee, blaming the fee for creating long lines at Bali's airport and serving as a disincentive to tourism.
