Bali Mobilizes Support for Central Java Disaster Relief

Bali's Sanglah General Hospital Send Equipment and Staff to Assist Volcano Victims at Mount Merapi.

(11/13/2010) Bali's Sanglah General Hospital has sent a team of volunteer medical personnel, first-aid equipment and surgical masks to Yogya in Central Java to help those affected by the continuing eruption of Mount Merapi.

According to Kompas.com, an initial team of Bali volunteers was dispatched to undertake a location survey and determine specific needs for personnel and medical supplies. Shortly thereafter a 5-person volunteer team comprised of a doctor, nurse and three drivers departed overland to Yogyakarta bringing with them 30,000 surgical masks, 28 pairs or surgical gloves, 100 containers of eye wash and 750 packages of sterile bandages all donated by the management and staff of Bali's Sanglah hospital.

"We initially wanted to send a larger medical team, but after we coordinated information with the Sarjito Hospital in Yogya we learned that these requirements were under control locally," explained Dr. Wayan Sutarga, the chief director at Sanglah General Hospital.

Sutarga continued: "Now we are sending a team to distribute assistance and survey what else is needed there and what are the actual conditions in the field. Later we will send another team."
