Rodents Putting a Dent in Bali's Rice Production

Rat Infestations Reducing Bali's Rice Output by 20%.

(11/13/2010) Approximately 300 hectares of productive rice fields are estimated to be under threat due to a scourge of rodents destroying the main food crop of the Balinese people. The 300 hectares of rice fields that may not deliver a full crop in the current year are spread across the regencies of Tabanan, Badung, Gianyar and Klungkung.

Quoted in Beritabali.com, the head of the Bali agricultural service, Made Putra Suryawan, places the level of crop destruction at between "light to medium damage." As a result of the rodent attacks, farmers are suffering an average 20% loss in their rice harvests.

Elaborating further, Putra Suryawan said, "production is down around 20% of the average production of 5.85 tons of dried and milled rice yielded by Bali's rice cultivators from each hectare of land.

Bali agricultural officers are providing Tiran or Mercon poisons to farmers in an effort to stem the growing population of rats attacking the rice harvest.
