In Praise of MICE

President Yudhoyono Urges Ministers and Tourism Industry to Optimize Momentum of Indonesia's Popularity as Destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions.

(12/18/2010) President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called on the relevant members of the presidential cabinet to exploit the momentum of the more than 600 international events that will be hosted in Indonesia in 2011 and beyond to promote and develop national tourism.

As reported by Bisnis.com, the President has also called on the cabinet to try to locate international events to cities in the regions, changing the over-focus on Jakarta and Bali for international gatherings.

Said the President: "There is no less than 600 conferences that will be held in Indonesia. To my cabinet ministers, (I say) look for meeting places in the cities across Indonesia. Don't only used Jakarta or Bali, but also other cities while introducing these destinations to the world. This is providing that the subject city is ready." Yudhoyono's comments were made at a Cabinet meeting discussing preparations of the ASEAN Summit to be held in Indonesia.

Indonesia's Chief Executive praised the development of the nation's meeting, incentive, conference and exhibition (MICE) sector. Adding: "MICE is now the trend in many countries. We can use this development to our economic benefit by trying to be more creative and innovative in the execution of these events."

The President counts 600 international events that will be hosted in Indonesia 2011-2013, providing ample time to prepare a number of cities across the nation to host these conferences. Some of the coming international events coming to Indonesia include: the ASEAN Summit, the Southeast Asian Games, the Global CEO Summit in 2012 and the APEC meeting in 2013.
