Making Book on Bali Villas

Bali Villa Association to Create 'Legal Villa Directory' to Help Curb Activities of Illegal Accommodation Providers.

(1/31/2011) The Bali Villa Association (BVA) plans to publish an official directory of legally registered tourism accommodation in 2011 in an effort to curb the activities of illegal villa operators on the island.

The chairman of the BVA, Ismoyo S. Soemarlan, told Bisnis Bali and Bali Post that his organization had reached an agreement with the Bali Hotel Association (BHA) to prepare the planned directory listing the hotels and villa operators in Bali holding proper operating licenses.

Ismoyo estimates that of the nearly 900 villas operating in Bali only around 500 have formal operating permits. The growth in villa operations in Bali has been truly dramatic, with an estimate of only 50 commercial villas existing on the island in 2006.

Ismoyo blamed illegal villas in Bali for lowering standards in service and security.

Taxes contributed by legal registered villas in 2010 are calculated at Rp. 100 billion (US$11.1 million). This compares to taxes of Rp. 25 billion (US$2.8 million) collected in 2006.
