57-Year-Old Angus McCaskill Gets 7 Years for Cocaine Use During Bali Holiday.

(2/5/2011) A 57-year-old Australian has been given a sentence of 7 years in prison for possession 3.58 grams of cocaine. Angus McCaskill was handed the stiff sentence that met prosecutor's demands under the tough 2009 narcotics law.

In addition to the prison sentence, the man was also fined Rp. 800 million (US88,000) which will add an additional four months prison time to his 7 year sentence, if left unpaid.

Originally from New Zealand, the Australian businessman was arrested in a shopping market parking lot on June 30, 2010, with five small plastic bags in his possession containing the drugs. Police were looking for the man after a supermarket employee had earlier found the man's wallet in the store containing small packets of white powder.

McCaskill claimed he purchased the drugs at a Kuta nightspot for Rp. 8 million (US$889).

Both McCaskill and his lawyer have said they felt the punishment was excessive and say they will appeal the sentence.
