Baliís Kuta Beached Reopens for Swimming

Bali's Kuta Beach Re-Opens to Swimmers as Water Quality Improves Following Plankton Die-Off.

(3/11/2011) Following heavy contamination caused by a massive plankton die-off during the first week of March, Baliís popular Kuta Beach was closed to swimmers [See:Today's Special: Double Chocolate Dip]

Much to the relief of the many hotels and businesses along that ocean stretch, the beach has again been declared safe for swimmers.

Putu Eka Sudaryatma, a government official charged with testing water quality for threats to health, reports that the pH levels of Kuta water have improved, after taking a sudden dip which experts think triggered the massive die-off of plankton, contaminating the swimming water with high levels of bacteria.

Quoted in the Jakarta Globe, Sudaryatma said, "
people can now go back and swim at the beach and not worry that they will get skin diseases."

Sudaryatma's office is undertaking regular tests of all major swimming beaches in Bali to ensure they remain safe for swimmers.
