High Times, But within Certain Limits

Indonesian Aviation Regulators Reaffirm Maximum Flight Times for Pilots.

(3/28/2011) Indonesia's Directorate for Airworthiness and Flight Operations of the Director General of Civil Aviation has issued a circular strictly limiting the total amount of flying time for commercial pilots to just 30 hours in any single week. The same directive also stipulates that Indonesian pilots cannot fly more than 110 hours in any calendar month and a maximum of 1,050 hours in any single calendar year.

The circular, emphasizing rules already set forth in the Aviation Law of 2009, was issued after an official review of several airlines revealed some carriers were issuing flight assignments in excess of the specified limits.

Under the law, pilots are expected and required to refuse flight assignments in excess of maximum flying time limits. Failure to do so can result in the withdrawal of a pilot's licenses for periods from one to six months, prison penalties of up to two years and fines of up to Rp. 500 million (US$55,500).
