Anchors Aweigh at Bali's Tanah Ampo Port

Pictorial Update on Recent Call of Holland Americas S S Volendam at Bali's Tanah Ampo International Port Terminal.

(4/4/2011) On Friday, March 25, 2011, the Holland America Line cruise ship S.S. Volendam was the first ship to call at the Tanah Ampo International Cruise Terminal in East Bali.

The terminal has been the topic of intense coverage in the Balinese press, criticized for the port's inability to contemplate the physical requirements needed to support large ship calls, particularly as regards the length of the berthing pier.

The Volendam with 1,440 lower berth was on an 18 night itinerary from Sydney to Singapore calling at Komodo, Bali, Semarang and Jakarta.

Forced to anchor off shore and use ship's tenders to land passengers on the uncompleted pier, this maiden call provided an opportunity to test the capacity of the cruise terminal. The feedback received from Holland America Line was extremely encouraging.

The current facilities at Tanah Ampo include:

A Cruise Terminal set in a pristine Balinese surroundings of 25 hectares.

A 154 meters long pier with a depth alongside varying from 8 to 12 meters.

A floating pontoon which permits to vessels at anchor to disembark their passengers for a short tender transfer to the pier.
