Flying Under Pressure

Indonesian Government Orders Safety Inspections of 23 Boeing 737s.

(4/9/2011) Following a number of fuselage failures in U.S. based Boeing 737s, the Indonesian government has instructed four Indonesian air carriers to urgently perform thorough inspections on 23 airplanes.

A Ministry of Transportation official, Bambang S. Ervan, told the national news agency Antara, "the aviation authority is asking the airlines to carry out preventive measures by tightly inspecting the types of airplanes we have determined."

The safety inspections are being conducted on Boeing 737-300, 737-400 and 737-500 aircraft. The airplanes under scrutiny represent 23% of the total 102 737s being flown in Indonesia.

The affected planes are operated by Garuda Indonesia, Batavia Air, Sriwijaya Air and Travira Air.
