Pardon the Inconvenience

Bali's Capital of Denpasar Bans New Convenience Stores in Bid to Protect Local Traders.

(4/11/2011) Jakarta Post reports that the Denpasar city administration will no longer give licenses for convenience stores in order to protect the interest of traditional traders.

The 24-hour convenience shops are being blamed for declining sales at traditional markets and small local traders in Denpasar.

The freeze on new permits is effective April 1, 2011.

Authorities estimate there are 150 convenience stores operating in Denpasar, many of which lacking complete licensing. Denpasar authorities are in the process of surveying all convenience stores, closing those establishments that do not have legal permits.

Authorities are said to be currently focusing their investigations on convenience stores operated by Circle-K, Indomart and Alfamart.
