Anand Krishna Ends Hunger Strike

Prosecutors Retreat in Face of Media Onslaught, Peaceful Public Bali Protest and 48-Day Hunger Strike by Pluralism Activist Anand Krishna.

(4/30/2011) [A Hunger for Justice] – a report carried on www.balidiscovery.com, told of a peaceful mass demonstration held on Wednesday, April 20, 2011,  in Bali on behalf of Indonesian spiritual leader Anand Krishna who had entered into a hunger strike to protest his detention during a criminal trial before the Jakarta courts.

Krishna, who has been on trial since August 2010 for alleged sexual misconduct, claims his sudden imprisonment in March was arbitrary and unnecessary given his complete cooperation during the trial process. Moreover, supporters and protesters in Bali claimed that the charges against Anand Krisha were fabrications, unsupported by evidence and the courts were using the trials as an opportunity to unfavorably spotlight Krishna's writings in  order to humiliate him for championing pluralism in Indonesia.

As a personal peaceful protest, Krishna commenced his hunger strike on March 9, 2011, declaring his readiness to sacrifice his life to oppose his unfair treatment under the law.

Apparently relenting to Krishna's protest and widespread statements of supports from leaders across the nation, the courts rescinded their detention order on April 26th declaring the defendant could return to his home during the remainder of the trial process. This decision allowed Krishna to end his hunger strike on its 48th day.

Doctors at the Sukanto Police Hospital determined that due to Kirshna's weakened condition and diminished level of immunity, his recovery would be speeded by allowing him to return to his home under round-the-clock supervision of a nutritionist and his private physician.
