Bali's Garden of Eden

Bali Safari and Marine Park: Seeking to Create a Sustainable Future by Reducing, Recycling and Reusing.

(5/21/2011) Bali Safari and Marine Park (BSMP) is undertaking an active program of environmental education, aimed at instilling the younger generation with a greater understanding of the natural world.

Wendy Husband, the Education and Conservation Manager at BSMP told Antara Bali: "Education regarding wild animals is presented in a number of ways designed to entertain and excite. Our desire is that visitors will become involved in the movement to protect the environment and support conservation efforts."

Based on the philosophy that education should be fun, the BSMP has created "Green Safari Campaign" that includes a program of captive breeding for the critically endangered Bali Starling. A part of the Taman Safari Indonesia Group that operates parks in Bali, East Java and Bogor, West Java - BSMP has successfully raised and released 50 Bali Starlings back into the wild at the West Bali National Park.

Wendy said that the Green Safari Campaign targets to increase environmental awareness in order that visitor will live a "greener and cleaner" life after a visit to the park.

BSMP also has a successful compost program that recycles animal waste into rich soil used to enrich the 40 hectare park located on the eastern outskirts of Bali capital of Denpasar. The composting products come in both solid and liquid forms that are sprayed on the verdant gardens of BSMP that is home to an estimated 10,000 varieties of plants.

Adopting a park-wide commitment to "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" the park is constantly seeking ways to reduce energy consumption, reduce paper consumption and reduce non-organic waste.
