(5/24/2011) The next time you’re visiting Bali and enjoying its many charms, consider giving "gift of life" to the people of Bali by paying a brief visit to donate blood at the Bali Red Cross Blood Bank at the Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar.
All blood is precious, but if you are RH Negative, and particularly O Negative, your donation of blood is extremely important. O Negative blood is only found among 1% of Asians, while it occurs among 8% of Caucasians. As a result, when an Asian with RH Negative blood is facing a life-threatening medical emergency and needs a blood transfusions there is almost invariably a shortage of adequate supply in the Bali Blood Bank.
The Bali Blood Bank is a modern, state-of-the-art facility that complies with international protocols of hygiene and medical safety.
The "new" Bali Blood Bank was opened in February 1999 through the generous support of Rotary Clubs in Traverse City, Michigan and Canada (District 6290). Rotarians from Japan and a local contingent of Rotarians led by the late Bali Rotarian Freddy Subiyanto also joined the challenge to raise the US$80,000 needed to build the modern, air-conditioned facility which is supported by two mobile bloodmobile collection units serving thousands of people each year.
If you can spare the brief amount of time it will take to donate a unit of blood during your next trip to Bali it might make all the difference to one of your Indonesian hosts or an island visitor in dire need of a transfusion.
